Making Pottery

Welcome to our studio...

Step #1

Throw the clay on the pottery to create the rough vessel.

Step #2

Allow the vessel to dry until it’s “leather hard” – no longer sticky, but still slightly pliable.

Step #3

Trim the vessel. This is to help refine the rough shape by removing excess clay. This is also the stage where handles are added and surfaces decorations are applied.

Step #4

Now the vessel must dry out completely before being placed in the kiln for the first time. This process removes all of the water from the clay. If dried to quickly, the clay will crack.

Step #5

Once the vessel go through the bisque kiln – approximately a 48 hour process – it is ready to be glazed. There are many ways to apply the glaze, but our favorite method is to dip and hold the piece in the glaze to ensure a nice, even coat.

Step #6

The piece is now ready to place in the kiln for one final firing. This time, the piece will be in the kiln for approximately 12 hours, and when it comes out, it’s ready for use!
